The purpose of the present study was to develop a sensitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for determination of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) protein to examine whether the receptor was overexpressed in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas compared with the normal counterpart, and to establish whether clinicopathological correlations were present by investigating a broad spectrum of parameters (tumour size, clinical stage, positive lymph nodes, tumour site, histological grade, keratinisation, preoperative irradiation and clinical outcome). The gene discussed is EGFR; the disease is head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.
