Circulating immune complexes (CICs) containing polymorphic epithelial mucin (PEM/MUC-1) were found in sera of 24.5% of 151 primary breast carcinoma patients and 18-21.4% of patients with advanced ovarian (n = 56) and breast carcinomas (n = 61), 37% of patients with benign breast tumours, but in only 2.1% of 96 healthy individuals. This evidence concerns the gene MUC1 and breast carcinoma.
