NFKB1 and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome: Systemic inflammation and immune dysregulation may be induced by intermittent hypoxia, as recurrent airway obstruction in OSA leads to chronic oxygen desaturation and reoxygenation cycles, which activate oxidative stress pathways and stimulate nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) signaling, leading to the secretion of cytokines that promote inflammation and thereby neutrophil activation and proliferation while suppressing lymphocyte counts.
