HBeAg-positive participants commenced tenofovir therapy earlier (median calendar year 2004, IQR 2003–2007 vs. 2007, IQR 2004–2010) and were more likely to be male (91.4% vs. 72.7%), to be born in a country with low HBV prevalence (82.7% vs. 59.9%), to have experienced an AIDS-defining condition (32.3% vs. 19.3%), and had higher ALT levels (median 54 IU/ml, IQR 37–86 vs. 33 IU/ml, IQR 22–57) compared with participants who were HBeAg-negative.
