Several inflammatory pathways are implicated in the development of atherosclerosis, with some, such as mutations of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) and apolipoprotein E (APOE) genes, due to genetic predispositions (Roy et al., 2009; Ibáñez et al., 2014).
