Supporting the hypothesis that dietary factors play a role in kidney health, our previous study demonstrated that gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and GABA-enriched rice suppressed inflammatory responses—including serum interleukin (IL)-6, renal monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1, transforming growth factor (TGF)-β, and IL-17A levels—and reduced macrophages infiltration in the kidney, thereby alleviating renal injury in a von Hippel-Lindau gene knockout CKD-prone mice model [6]. The gene discussed is TGFB1; the disease is chronic kidney disease.
