Consistent with this robust literature, the current study found statistically significantly elevated serum PLIN2 levels in the NAFLD patient group, supporting the hypothesis that PLIN2 acts as an active and effective biomarker reflecting NAFLD development.Although PLIN2 is primarily an intracellular lipid droplet-associated protein expressed in hepatocytes, several mechanisms may account for its presence in the circulation. This evidence concerns the gene PLIN2 and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.
