Given that changes in FUT3 expression/activity modify the composition and structure of intestinal mucosal glycans, changes in glycan patterns select a different pool of species, e.g., reduce the number of those that produce SCFA, and that reduced concentrations of certain SCFA have been reported in MS patients, a hypothesis has been put forward that the studied FUT3 gene polymorphisms may negatively affect SCFA secretion in patients with multiple sclerosis. This evidence concerns the gene FUT3 and myeloid sarcoma.
