In exploring the indirect regulatory mechanisms between β-hydroxybutyrylation modification and ferroptosis, Yu et al.'s study revealed that in neurodegenerative disease models, such as Parkinson’s disease (PD), BHB inhibits lipid peroxidation and ferroptosis by upregulating ZFP36 (an RNA-binding protein) and suppressing ACSL4 protein expression (Yu X. et al., 2023). This evidence concerns the gene ZFP36 and Parkinson disease.
