The highest degree of overexpression was observed for AKR1B10 in NASH versus both SS and liver donors, but also the enzymes ALDH1A2 and ALDH1A3 (Aldehyde Dehydrogenase 1 Family Member A2 and A3), which are responsible for retinoic acid synthesis from retinaldehyde, were inversely correlated with plasma retinol levels. Here, ALDH1A2 is linked to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis.
