In severe cases of COVID-19, a “cytokine storm” was documented [27], characterized by elevated plasma levels of IL-2, IL-6, IL-7, IL-10, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), IFN-γ, inducible protein 10 (IP-10/CXCL10), monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1), macrophage inflammatory protein 1 alpha (MIP-1α), and TNF-α, reflecting an exacerbated immune activation with potential implications for the normal progression of pregnancy. The gene discussed is CCL2; the disease is COVID-19.
