Notably, almost 70% of the cohort had hypoalbuminemia, which may be explained by the study setting (i.e. exclusively hospitalized patients who typically present with greater systemic inflammation, fluid overload, and nutritional deficits), the less stringent definition of hypoalbuminemia (i.e. albumin <35 g/L), and the cohorts advanced age together with a high burden of comorbidity, particularly CKD. The gene discussed is ALB; the disease is chronic kidney disease.
