Transcriptomic analyses of CD8 T cells from patients with autoimmune disorders such as antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and type 1 diabetes revealed that a gene expression signature resembling that of exhausted CD8 T cells in chronic viral infection correlated with reduced relapse frequency and sustained remission [27, 28]. This evidence concerns the gene CD8A and autoimmune disease.
