Although histological analysis at 60 minutes did not provide any evidence of necrosis, the TUNEL (Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP Nick-End Labeling) assay identified myocytes undergoing apoptosis, which was absent after 24 hours of reperfusion, suggesting that cTnI increase occurs after ischemia of brief duration that is insufficient to produce myocardial necrosis and represent myocardial injury related to apoptosis in the absence of pathological evidence of necrosis [73].
