LDLR and heart disorder: The discovery of the LDL receptors by Brown and Goldstein (37, 38) and the development of statin drugs (initially compactin, alias mevastatin, by Akiro Endo at Sankyo in 1972 and mevinolin, alias lovastatin, by Alfred Albert at Merck under the direction of Roy Vagelos in 1979) are major accomplishments in the development of effective therapeutics for heart disease (1–3).
