While removal of ovaries in young adult mice (at 8 weeks) led to reduced vHIP Egr1 mRNA levels (Fig. 1e) and increased anxiety-related behaviour in the open field (Fig. 1f) compared to age-matched, high-estrogenic (proestrus) cycling mice, the cyclical oestrogen replacement restored proestrus-like levels of Egr1 expression (Fig. 1e, Supplementary Data 1) and partially rescued anxiety-related behaviour (Fig. 1f, Supplementary Data 1) in OVX mice.
