The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA), involving 3876 participants from the general population (668 with NAFLD), showed that IL-6 was independently associated with subclinical atherosclerosis, as indicated by a high CAC score, suggesting that IL-6 is not only linked to the presence of subclinical atherosclerosis, but also to its severity [159]. This evidence concerns the gene IL6 and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.
