Additional research identified FUNDC1 expression was down-regulated in the spinal cord of an ALS mouse model, and FUNDC1 overexpression was found to significantly improve motor function in ALS mice by intraspinal injection of AAV9-FUNDC1 into the spinal cord of the mouse model, demonstrating that FUNDC1-mediated mitophagy has a protective effect in ALS, improving motor function, extending survival, and reducing neuronal apoptosis (113). This evidence concerns the gene FUNDC1 and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
