Interestingly, genes related to glycolysis (PFKP, G6PD, and GLUT1) were among those most significantly downregulated in the knockdown (Fig. 2D), although hexokinase 1 (HK1) which phosphorylates glucose to G-6-P was significantly upregulated, suggesting alterations in glucose metabolism that could contribute to bioenergetic dysregulation, which is a known feature of ALS [49, 50]. The gene discussed is PFKP; the disease is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
