Given that certain subtypes of EB, including JEB caused by ITGA3 mutations and severe generalized forms of EB simplex (EBS), involve respiratory complications in addition to mucocutaneous symptoms (Fine et al., 2014), intravenous administration of MSCs may be a promising approach for EB treatment as it has shown early success for other pulmonary conditions, such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (Xiao et al., 2020). Here, ITGA3 is linked to epidermolysis bullosa simplex.
