The fat mass and obesity‐associated (FTO) gene, which is located on chromosome 16 [6], is responsible for producing a nucleic acid demethylase enzyme that utilizes 2‐oxoglutarate and Fe(II) to catalyze the demethylation of 3‐methylthymine in single‐stranded DNA. Here, FTO is linked to obesity due to melanocortin 4 receptor deficiency.
