Marincola Smith et al. (2021) further demonstrated a decreased expression of CLDN8 in inflammatory bowel disease, which is denoted by a defective barrier function. Although CLDN22 contributes to the general function of claudins in regulating intestinal paracellular permeability and barrier integrity (Wang et al., 2016), existing published research and scholarly materials are scarce, and its specific functions are still unknown. This evidence concerns the gene CLDN8 and inflammatory bowel disease.
