Initial laboratory work-up on admission to the cardiac unit revealed signs of viral infection with elevated inflammatory markers: procalcitonin (PCT) 1.27 ng/mL (reference < 0.5 ng/mL), C-reactive protein (CRP) 98.7 mg/L (reference < 5.0 mg/L), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) 19.2 pg/mL (reference < 7.0 pg/mL).
