Interestingly, TOM20, a component of this multi-subunit system, is the main receptor responsible for the uptake and translocation of the toxic Amyloid β peptide(s) (Aβ) produced from APP proteolysis by its processing enzymes (β-secretase and γ-secretase) and accumulating into mitochondria of vulnerable brain regions from individuals affected by Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and preclinical mouse models [56]. This evidence concerns the gene TOMM20 and early-onset autosomal dominant Alzheimer disease.
