In addition to its presence in neural tissue, LRRK2 is expressed in peripheral organs and systems—including blood cells, lungs, the gastrointestinal tract, and breast tissue—providing a possible explanation for the higher incidence of hematologic, brain, colon, and breast cancers observed in individuals with LRRK2-related PD [24,25]. Here, LRRK2 is linked to Parkinson disease.
