The balancing role of BMP-4 in counteracting TGF-β2-mediated fibrotic remodeling is further supported by the protective effect of BMP-4 on RGCs and axonal regeneration, as demonstrated by enhanced RGC survival in an experimental glaucoma mouse model—suggesting that BMP-4’s function extends beyond ECM regulation to include direct support of neuronal integrity [22,23,24]. This evidence concerns the gene BMP4 and glaucoma.
