MAPT and Alzheimer disease: Notably, tau has been found to interact with several antioxidant enzymes, both within neurofibrillary tangles and in mitochondrial compartments (Fig. 2) (Drummond et al. 2020; Tracy et al. 2022), which may help explain the reduced mitochondrial redox capacity observed in synaptosomes from the hippocampus and cerebral cortex of young and adult 3xTg-AD mice (Espino de la Fuente-Muñoz et al., 2020).
