Surprisingly, gender, age, and comorbidities are not the strongest predictor for COVID-19 patient mortality; increased level of interleukin 6 (IL-6), C-reactive proteins (CRP), and fewer lymphocytes have been shown to be significantly associated with mortality, while decreased levels of IL-6 and white blood cell count 1–2 days after ICU admission are significantly associated with survival (Bartoszewicz et al., 2024). This evidence concerns the gene IL6 and COVID-19.
