Our results in mice support the idea that obesity disrupts iron homeostasis in the dam and establishes a positive association between the degree of hypoxia observed in fetuses of obese pregnancy with dam hepcidin levels, in concordance with previous reports in humans indicating a positive correlation between android fat and hepcidin levels (Stoffel et al., 2020). Here, HAMP is linked to obesity due to melanocortin 4 receptor deficiency.
