Although the early studies on asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic patients reported lactoferrin’s supplementation ability to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection [164], reduce the time to viral clearance, and improve clinical symptoms [165,166], the only three designed as controlled, randomized, clinical trials showed no protective effects against SARS-CoV-2 infection in healthcare professionals providing care to COVID-19 patients [167] as well as no additional benefits to the standard-of-care therapy in moderate-to-severe hospitalized patients [168,169]. This evidence concerns the gene LTF and COVID-19.
