While both IL-6 and IFN-γ are proinflammatory cytokines that can contribute to the systemic inflammation occurring during cytokine storms, the increased levels of the immunomodulatory cytokine IL-10 detected in blood, heart, and liver and the decreased levels of the T cell stimulatory cytokine IL-2 in blood of EEHV-HD cases may appear to contradict the occurrence of a cytokine storm, as these are immune dampening by themselves. Here, IL6 is linked to Huntington disease.
