Recently, the majority of hamster studies involving the RAS have focused on ACE2 because of this enzyme’s role in serving as the receptor for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and because unlike mice and rats, the SARS-CoV-2 virus efficiently replicates in Syrian hamsters causing lung injury and disease features consistent with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) [50] due to the ability of the hamster ACE2 to bind tightly to the spike protein [51]. Here, ACE2 is linked to COVID-19.
