Treatment of infected Calu-3 cells with DFMO and Sulindac at the concentrations that suppress intracellular polyamine levels and inhibit proliferation or induce apoptosis in these cancer cells [28,48,49] significantly suppressed the RNA levels of the SAT1 and SMOX genes (p = 0.0007, p = 0.002, respectively), while the ODC1 mRNA level was not affected (Figure 1A, right panel).
