Recent evidence by Sanapour et al. demonstrated that combined treatment with TQ and MTX markedly enhanced apoptosis in osteosarcoma (Saos-2) cells by upregulating pro-apoptotic Bax and caspase-9 while downregulating anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 expression, leading to a significant increase in total apoptotic cell death (73%) compared with either agent alone (48% for TQ and 53% for MTX) [9,16]. The gene discussed is CASP9; the disease is osteosarcoma.
