As the infarction progresses (3–7 days post infarction), neutrophils gradually decline, and monocytes accumulate and polarise into reparative macrophages, which secrete anti‐inflammatory and pro‐repair factors, including transforming growth factor‐β (TGF‐β), IL‐10 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), to promote tissue healing.
