A recent pilot unblinded trial of nebulized recombinant human deoxyribonuclease I/dornase alfa in asthma and COPD patients pre-screened for high levels of sputum eDNA demonstrated a significant decrease in eDNA levels compared with placebo, and an improvement of COPD symptom score, thus may merit further investigation in larger populations [131]. The gene discussed is DNASE1; the disease is asthma.
