Zebrafish with gdf6a mutations have shorter lifespans, reduced swim endurance, disrupted NMJ morphology, and a reduction in spinal motoneurons, paralleling ALS pathology (Duval et al., 2014), which are worsened by superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) mutations (Rosen et al., 1993; Duval et al., 2014). The gene discussed is SOD1; the disease is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
