CEP290 and ciliopathy: Our current knowledge of CEP290 is predominantly based on studies in Chlamydomonas, specialized cell types, such as photoreceptors or kidney tubule cells in mouse, cell lines (e.g. hTERT-RPE1, IMCD3) and human fibroblasts or urine epithelial cells (hURECS) derived from individuals with ciliopathies (Slaats et al., 2015; Potter et al., 2021; Srivastava et al., 2017; Shimada et al., 2017; McEwen et al., 2007; May-Simera et al., 2018; Chang et al., 2006).
