NLRP3 and preeclampsia: Concurrent chronic low-grade inflammation promotes leukocyte adhesion, activation of the NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3)-inflammasome, and the release of anti-angiogenic factors [soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1) and soluble endoglin (sEng)], culminating in the inadequate spiral artery transformation, placental hypoxia, and systemic hypertension that characterize preeclampsia and IUGR [8].
