Kong et al. after constructing a logistic model using three inflammatory indicators (HBP, CRP and PCT) for predicting severe acute pancreatitis (SAP), a condition that could lead to progressive systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and multiorgan failure, showed that HBP (p < 0.001), CRP (p = 0.001), and PCT (p < 0.001) were risk factors for SAP and the combined model of the biomarkers, HBP-CRP-PCT (AUC = 0.963), could effectively discriminate severe pancreatitis from non-severe pancreatitis improving the patient’s outcome [62]. The gene discussed is CRP; the disease is systemic inflammatory response syndrome.
