Metformin and insulin were the established treatments for T2D in youth until the recent approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of two SGLT2 inhibitors (dapagliflozin and empagliflozin) for children and adolescents above 10 years of age with T2D, for use in combination with diet and exercise. This evidence concerns the gene SLC5A2 and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
