In ischemic stroke, microglia polarize into distinct phenotypes: pro-inflammatory M1 (secreting TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6) and pro-angiogenic M2 (releasing IL-10, TGF-β, VEGF) (Yenari et al., 2010; Ponomarev et al., 2013). This evidence concerns the gene IL6 and ischemic stroke.
