INS and Hypoglycemia: The answer to the above main findings is that although insulin therapy resulted in a significantly greater reduction in HbA1c (mean decrease of 1.3% vs. 0.6% with oral agents), it was also associated with a higher incidence of hypoglycemia (18% vs. 7%; absolute risk increase 11%) and greater weight gain (mean increase of 2.3 kg vs. 0.9 kg).
