It has been proposed that adrenochrome, as an endogenous neurotoxin, can initiate the neurodegenerative process in idiopathic PD by triggering a series of pathological reactions, including mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, impaired function of the lysosomal and proteasomal protein degradation systems, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and the formation of neurotoxic α-synuclein oligomers (Huenchuguala & Segura-Aguilar, 2024a; Wang et al., 2022a). This evidence concerns the gene SNCA and Parkinson disease.
