LncRNAs can intervene in the regulation of breast cancer stem cells (BCSCs) related pathways; examples are the lncRNA LINC01133 (which induces Kruppel-like factor 4 (KLF4) gene) (44, 45) and the long intergenic non-coding RNA 00511 (LINC00511) which functions as a miR-185-3p “sponge”, indirectly activating (via the E2F1 protein targeting) the transcription of Nanog, a promoter of regeneration and prolonged proliferative potential of stem-like cancer cells, able to mediate oncogenic reprogramming. This evidence concerns the gene E2F1 and breast carcinoma.
