The diagnosis is based on the presence of a set of compatible features (histological, clinical, and laboratory) and exclusion of possible etiologies of liver disease, such as viral (hepatitis B and C), alcoholic, hereditary (hemochromatosis, Wilson's disease, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency), cholestatic (autoimmune cholangitis, primary biliary cirrhosis), and drug-induced. Here, SERPINA1 is linked to Wilson disease.
