Some well-established nLTR-derived examples include de novo Alu insertions into BRCA1 and BRCA2, which predispose carriers to hereditary breast and ovarian cancers (Batzer and Deininger 2002; Teugels et al. 2005), and germline L1 insertions into the APC TSG, which underlie familial adenomatous polyposis and increase colorectal cancer risk (Miki et al. 1992). The gene discussed is BRCA1; the disease is ovarian carcinoma.
