MAPT and Alzheimer disease: In AD, Aβ plaques trigger and can interact with microglia to adopt a phagocytic but dysfunctional disease-associated microglia (DAM) phenotype (Ries and Sastre, 2016, Zhao et al., 2018) while Aβ-specific T cells infiltrate the brain and exacerbate tau pathology and neurodegeneration (Keren-Shaul et al., 2017).
