A variety of novel serum and urinary biomarkers, such as neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1), liver-type fatty acid-binding protein (L-FABP)), interleukin-18 (IL-18)), and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-2 associated with insulin-like growth factor-binding protein-7 (TIMP-2 × IGFBP-7) [3] have been tested to predict and/or detect subclinical forms of AKI [4]. The gene discussed is IGFBP7; the disease is acute kidney injury.
