While the inherited defects of adrenal steroidogenic enzymes were excluded [7,8], an increasing number of studies indicate that elevated adrenal androgen secretion in PCOS is not related to altered pituitary responsivity to corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) or to increased sensitivity of adrenal androgens to adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulation [9,10]. This evidence concerns the gene POMC and polycystic ovary syndrome.
